In the absence of any trophies this season the best moments this year all centre on goals – or more to the point goals that won us matches or caused our rivals melt down.

Still 014a - Chelsea FanCastThe first nomination is for Brana Ivanovic’s winner against Man City away in the Premier League. It was an incredibly tense affair Branislav-Ivanovic2and we all knew that being the first team to beat City in the league at Middle Eastlands would lay down a massive marker for the season. As the match was on a Monday night we elected to do the Chelsea FanCast as a live match coverage show. Of course within minutes we had forgotten that we were actually doing the show. When Brana scored we went absolutely mental – as did the Chelsea supporters who were lucky enough to be there. It wasn’t a bad goal either and well done to Brana who has a habit of coming up with the odd barnstorming and important goal.

Another unlikely hero is Demba Ba who for much of the season has been the forgotten man of Chelsea’s three misfiring strikers. He somewhat surprisingly gets the next two nominations.

The first is for his last minute goal against PSG at home in the Champions’ League quarter final. This was the goal that won the tie, and for me even better that he basically shanked it in off his shin. A horrible goal and a beautiful goal all in one! Even better the scenes that it induced will live long in the memory. Stamford Bridge erupted as the relief and tension evaporated. Jose Mourinho ran down the touchline belting a water bottle in the process and jumped in to the crowd of celebrating players – apparently to give them last minute instructions. The fact that he later claimed that he had planned everything including Ba’s last minute goal made it all the better.

Ba’s second nomination has to go for his goal against Liverpool away in the Premier League. Chelsea were fielding what amounted to a ‘B’ team against the form team and title contenders Liverpool. Before the match the Chelsea team were met by a mass of red pyro wielding and flag waving Liverpool fans proclaiming their soon to be won title. But Jose had a plan! He stifled Liverpool with well Demba-Ba3-675x425organised defence and a lot of disruption and time wasting. The wonderful irony about the latter being that Ba’s goal came in the first half injury time added on for Chelsea’s time wasting. But the best was yet to come. Stevie Me – the man who personifies so much of why we despise the scousers received the ball just inside his own half. The midfield genius (cough) mis-controlled it and in his desperation to recover slipped, allowing Demba Ba to seize on the opportunity and race towards the goal. To be fair, Ba had a lot to do before skilfully slotting the ball in to the back of the net at the Kop end sending Chelsea supporters into delirium and the Kop in to silence. Title winning party well and truly pooped on and a wonderfully stoic and tactical master class dished out.
