As always in a Chelsea season we have seen many many moments of comedy, downright silliness and evidence of ‘Proper Chels’ this season.

Many worthy candidates didn’t make the cut this year including the brilliant lads adorning all parts of Europe (and Arsenal) with Chelsea stickers replete with the legend “Chelsea FC: Ruining Football since 2003”. Indeed the 9,000 Chelsea taking liberties at Arsenal in the Carling Cup last autumn didn’t make the cut but was well worth a shout.

Those who thought that Samuel Eto’o made little contribution to Chelsea should also think again. He may not have scored a hatful of goals, but he provided us with two moments of sheer celery with his ‘Old Man’ goal celebration against Spurs at home, and his reaction to sniffing what we thought was amyl nitrate in the same game, but was in fact smelling salts. We know they were smelling salts as Dan Levene brought the very same bottle on to the show and we road tested it to make sure!

But this year the difficult choice in nailing it down to three nominations was made by the boys on Chelsea FanCast #288. And they are:

Gerrard’s Slip

038 Gerrard slipStevie Me , self-proclaimed “most deserving player to win a Premier League medal” – suffering from one of the best moments of schadenfreude ever seen on a football field. Deep into injury time of the first half against Liverpool (time added on mainly due to Chelsea time wasting and disrupting play) the ball was passed to Gerrard, who mis-controlled, and then compounded the mistake by slipping and losing the ball to the onrushing Demba Ba. Demba Ba stolled on and put the ball away to open the scoring for Chelsea at the Kop end. Pandemonium. It couldn’t have happened to a more footballer – that’s Gerrard not Ba! And in the process the wheels of Liverpool’s wagon fell off and their title hopes ended in tears.

European Flags

Our next nomination goes to the sequence of European flags displayed from the Matthew Harding End before our Champions’ League matches and selected Premier League matches (Arsenal and Spurs to wind them up – we’re the only team in London with a European Cup!). A massive amount of expense (thanks Mr X) and effort (thanks @onlyapound, Dazza and Pablo) goes in to creating the flags and co-ordinating and displaying them on a match day. But the effort is worth it as they look absolutely superb and add greatly to the atmosphere. Everything about them is ‘proper Chels’ and we can rightly be very proud of our European history (without wanting to sound too Scouse). There are four flags representing the European Cup; Cup Winners Cup; Europa Cup and Super Cup – and Chelsea are the only English team to have won all four European trophies – something to shout loud and clear and I for one am very proud of that fact as should you lot be!

Jose Mourinho

There can’t have been one proper Chelsea fan who wasn’t delighted and excited in equal measure to see the return of Jose Mourinho – The Special One – this season. But what could we expect from him? Would he be different? Would he be mellow? Would his love 047 Josefor Chelsea have diminished at all? Not a bit of it! From the get go he made it clear that he sees himself as one of us, and his job is to support us like we support him. The old rogue has been on brilliant form all season both on and off the pitch. This nomination is for a cumulative series of events featuring Jose Mourinho – the highlights of which were Jose scribbling ‘balls’ on a journalist’s notepad to indicate what he felt Chelsea lacked; his running down the touchline when we scored against PSG to issue vital instructions to the players; his evisceration of Arsene Wenger in the press conference where he proclaimed that Wenger is a “Specialist in Failure”, offering music to our ears in another press conference where he proclaimed that “I am not a neutral – I am Chelsea” and finally his celebration after we scored the second and winning goal at Anfield where he ran towards the supporters shouting and screaming and thumping his chest. Magic. Not so much the Special One, more the Special One of Us! He seems to have adroitly tuned in to the mood of match going Chelsea supporters to a tee, articulating what we think and it is so refreshing to see after having to endure a fat Spanish fraud last season. Long may he reign – he is ‘proper Chels’ and is 100% celery!

Personal celery moments: 1 Falling down the stairs to the Paris metro & still limping. 2 Spending virtually £500 on flights not taken & hotels not used

  2. Dan Silver says:

Very tough one this, but given it spoilt that team from Merseysides “title hopes” and the song that was sung at most grounds after the event it has to be Steve “the slip” Gerrard
