IMG-20140308-00372Many complain that we don’t sing enough songs (probably true). Some complain that we sing too many Sloop John B songs (definitely true!). Others complain that we have lost our wit and humour in the new songs we come up with or that we don’t sing enough of the old songs (possibly true). The bottom line is that you can’t keep all of the people happy all of the time. But for the boys on the Chelsea FanCast #288 there were three standout songs this season.

The first has to be the brilliant Willian song – inspired by the imagination of one of our favourite guest’s @WalterOtton and his great mate Smiffy whilst away with Chelsea in Europe. It has many things going for it. It is not Sloop John B. It is funny. It references our hatred of Sp*rs. It’s about a player. What’s not to like? Well singing it at inappropriate times perhaps but other than that arguably one of the best songs we have come with for years:

“The shit from Spurs, they bought his flight, but Willian he saw the light. He got the call from Abramovich, and off he went to Stamford Bridge. He hates T*tt*nham, He hates T*tt*nham, He hates T*tt*nham, and He hates T*tt*nham”. Simple really – if you know how!

The next nomination whilst being a Sloop John B derivative still has much to commend it. Sometimes in games, a new song appears just when the team need it most and the situation demands it. This is such a song. Coming at a time when we were still trailing PSG on aggregate on the Champions’ League quarter final, the Bridge came together as one and boomed out “We’ve done it before, we’ve done it before, Champions of Europe, we’ve done it before. Desired effect – lifted the hitherto tense crowd, and lifted the players on to victory which is the point isn’t it!

The final nomination is very much a personal choice. Based on an old song brought out for players whose names allow it, and derived from an old Gary Glitter song or Oasis rehash if Chelsea v Newcastle United - Barclays Premier Leagueyou prefer! There was something about Samuel Eto’o that I have very much loved all season. He is a decent player but his swagger and arrogance on and offf the pitch – and repartee with the supporters – singles him out as a real ‘Don’. Something quite Old Skool about him too. Either way we all took to him. After his first goal for the club it was yours truly that belted out “Ello, Ello, Samuel Eto’o, Samuel Eto’ from Gate 17. Of course very few, if any, chose to join in. In fact Steve Burn had more success getting a hideous “Scoring a goal like Sameul Eto’o” based on the God awful “Moonlight Shadow” going! I got my revenge though after Eto’o had netted a few more times, the “Ello, Ello” chant soon spread round the ground and became Eto’os song of choice. In fact the player whose goal celebrations are the most manic seen at Stamford Bridge for a while adopted his song and always acknowledged it at the ground with a wave or a clap and even added it to his twitter hashtag #ElloEllo. Top song for a top man!
