FIVE astute signings for Chelsea to consider

The summer transfer window often fills fans with optimism regarding big name arrivals and vast spending, particularly at Chelsea.

But alongside the established names, less glamorous players are often needed, with the modern game one in which a deep and completive squad of players is needed.

Although Jose has developed a reputation for vast spending, the Portuguese coach has pulled off some astute signings down the years, getting in solid and dependable stars for fairly small fees to give his sides the competitive edge across the campaign.

With Fabregas and Costa having been snapped up for large fees, he will once again be looking to do the same between now and the deadline, and here are five names ‘The Special One’ may be looking at.

PIERRE-EMERICK AUBAMEYANG

Despite only joining the Borussia Dortmund ranks last summer and netting 16 goals during his debut season at Westfalen, including this absolute beauty against Mainz…

Reports from Germany suggest the Black-Yellows are prepared to offload Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Often dubbed ‘The African Neymar’, the 25 year-old boasts a mixture of pace, trickery and netting prowess, as shown in the video below…

Chelsea have emerged as surprise suitors for the Gabon international…

…and capable of playing on either wing or as an out-and-out striker, he has a lot to offer the Blues in the final third: A ridiculously cheap £6million release clause has been mooted by the Daily Express, but other sources suggest a more lucrative fee:

EZEQUIEL LAVEZZI

Another winger-forward option known to have tickled Jose Mourinho’s transfer fancy is PSG star Ezequiel Lavezzi.

He was in good form last season too, finding twelve goals and ten assists as the Parisians claimed a second consecutive Ligue 1 title. Blues fans will particularly remember this stunning strike from the Argentine in last term’s Champions League quarter final:

You can’t imagine the Chelsea gaffer approving of this aqua-based mischief too much…

But rated at around £18million by the Metro, the versatile forward could prove to be an astute addition.

ADRIEN RABIOT

Another PSG player who could be making a West London switch this summer is contract-rebelling prodigy Adrien Rabiot, according to the Metro.

The 19 year-old, who once spent a season at Manchester City’s academy, is one of the Parisians’ most exciting youth prospects, having already made 38 appearances and thoroughly impress during a loan spell with Toulouse during the 2012/13 campgaign, where he netted this tidy long-ranger.

Famed for his athleticism fluency on the ball, as detailed below, the floppy-haired midfielder would certainly add something different to Chelsea’s engine room.

He’s a short clip of the France U21 in action:

And having rejected the opportunity to extend his PSG contract, which expires next summer, Rabiot now looks destined for a summer departure.

But Chelsea will face competition from Serie A….

FILIPE LUIS

Although Cesar Azpilicueta showed great promise at left-back last season, Chelsea appear determined to sign a new No.3 with their determined pursuit of Atletico Madrid’s Filipe Luis.

That impressive tackling return, combined with Luis’ 6 foot 2 frame, will particularly appeal to Jose Mourinho – whilst the rest of the footballing world has become obsessed with ‘false full-backs’, the South American is a throwback to more defensive tradition. He’s not bad going forward either, as demonstrated in the below video…

Blues fans will be hoping however that the Atletico defender leaves this kind of thing at Vincente Calderon…

FABIAN SCHAR

After last night’s abject performance…

…few Chelsea fans will regret Jose Mourinho’s decision to offload David Luiz to PSG. But the heart-broken Brazilian does leave a floppy-haired shaped hole in the Chelsea squad.

Enter FC’s Basel Fabian Schar, a ball-playing centre-back prodigy with an interesting knack for scoring goals…

…not to mention this wonder strike during his FC Wil days…

Statistically, the Switzerland international was the best defender in the Champions League proper last season, as detailed below…

…and his World Cup performances weren’t too bad either, making eight interceptions during two outings at Brazil 2014.

The 22 year-old, rated at around £9million by Squawka.com, is a fine talent, but resultantly comes with a number of high-calibre suitors.
