FIVE Filipe Luis alternatives for Chelsea to consider

Lately, Jose Mourinho has taken to liking Atletico Madrid.

He made it a priority to snag star striker Diego Costa from them for the upcoming season, and the deal was about finalised even prior to the conclusion of last season. He has also been rumored for a slew of other players, including Koke, Tiago, and Filipe Luis.

Luis, a left back, represents the most important of the three players as Chelsea will be forced to find a replacement for Ashley Cole, who did not have his contract renewed following the season. Chelsea have reportedly made an offer of £15m to Atletico for the 28-year-old Luis, but it remains to be seen whether or not they want to part with one of their most important players.

In the event that they choose to hold onto him, Chelsea will have to look elsewhere. What that in mind, here are FIVE other options at left back for Chelsea next season.

Alberto Moreno: The 22-year-old Spanish left back is an up-and-coming player who was a surprise cut from Spain’s national team for this summer’s World Cup. He is the quintessential modern-day full back because he has the pace and skill to move up and down the wing.

Sevilla isn’t the most financially deep club, as evident by them losing Álvaro Negredo, Jesús Navas and Gary Medel last summer. Moreno is one of the most promising young players in the world, but his tackling is an area that he can improve to take his game to even greater heights.

Marcos Rojo: Rojo is another rising star, but a slightly different player than the aforementioned Moreno. At 6’1, Rojo is able to win balls in the air that Moreno (5’7) simply can’t. Rojo is also able to play centre back in a pinch, something that Mourinho likes in his players.

Rojo has impressed at the World Cup for Argentina, and the Sporting CP star has acknowledged that he would be open to a move to a larger club. Chelsea prefers its defenders be more stable on the back line than aggressive in attack, which fits Rojo’s style of play nicely despite his ability to go forward.

Georgi Schennikov: The Russian national is another player adept at getting forward and joining the attack. He burst onto the scene with CSKA Moscow in 2009 at a 19-year-old, and now at 23 he could be keen for a move to the Premier League.

Previously, he has turned down offers to join a bigger club, preferring to stay at home and play in the Russian League. He is solid in every aspect of the game, but his offense is a little more advanced than his defense. He would be another solid fit for Mourinho.

Alex Sandro: Sandro has been manning left back for Porto since 2011, when the Brazilian left Santos on a £7.6 deal. At 23, he is still improving and boasts superior pace and playmaking on the ball.

At 5’11, he’s big enough to make a physical impact against opposing wingers both on the ground and in the air. At this point in his career, he’s more of an upside transfer for Mourinho that could pay huge dividends down the road.

Ricardo Rodriguez: Rodriguez impressed many at the World Cup this summer with his steady play for Switzerland. He’s six feet tall, and looks more like a centre back as a result.

He’s only 21, but has playing professionally at the senior level since he was 17. Wolfsburg paid £7m for him in 2012, and given his potential, his price tag for Chelsea would easily exceed that. He is another player where the potential outweighs the actual product right now.
