THREE reasons a Drogba-Chelsea reunion is a bad idea

Reports have begun to surface that Chelsea are keen on setting up a reunion with Didier Drogba, who spent 2004-2012 at Stamford Bridge. He departed having scored 157 goals in 341 matches for them, the most of any foreign player and fourth highest all-time for Chelsea.

The Ivory Coast international spent half a season with the Shanghai Shenua in the Chinese Super League before leaving for Galatasary of the Super Lig amid disputes over not being paid by Shanghai.

He was even named Turkish Football of the Year in 2013/14 after scoring 14 goals in 36 matches for Galatasary.

With all of that said, it would be a bad move for Chelsea if they looked to bring Drogba back to Stamford Bridge. Don’t believe it? Here are THREE reasons why.

Age

While signing Drogba would be a splashy move that would undoubtedly spark fan interest, fans would quickly find out that Drogba is a shell of his old self. At 36, the striker simply doesn’t have the skill or athleticism necessary to compete with Premier League back lines on a consistent basis.

Reports say certain Qatari clubs are willing to pay Drogba in excess of £3m in wages should he join one next season; can Jose Mourinho really justify coming close to that for a striker that may not even be the second best striker on Chelsea next season?

Depth/Declining Skill

As previously mentioned, Chelsea are already loaded at forward, with Diego Costa, Fernando Torres, Andre Schurrle, and even Victor Moses all capable of playing up top. That doesn’t even factor in Romelu Lukaku and Demba Ba, both of whom may end up being placed on loan elsewhere next season but still are full-time members of Chelsea.

Is Drogba better than any of them? Possibly. He may also be a more natural fit than Moses or Schurrle, but his skill and fitness level make it difficult to project him being a consistent performer. After all, Drogba only started one World Cup for the Ivory Coast and was unable to score in any of the three matches he played in.

Win-Now Mode

With so much uncertainty surrounding the Chelsea forward situation, as Ba, Lukaku and Torres could all be on the way out, Mourinho will have to add someone who can contribute and as insurance in the event of Costa starting off slowly. Does he really want that person to be Drogba?

It might make more sense to spend a little bit more on a better player (Mario Mandzukic or Edinson Cavani) that is more likely to make an impact. Chelsea have already made moves that can put them over the top in the Premier League next season, and adding another impact forward could well be the one to do it.

Drogba would be a nice end-of-the-bench option for Mourinho, but not someone who can be relied upon to make a heavy contribution. He would be better off looking elsewhere.
