Man of the Match: Sunderland v Chelsea

On a day when the whole team was probably about 10% off and let’s face it they had had 3 matches in a week and had reached heights in terms of quality of football not seen for a good while, it was not surprising that they had an off day.

That said the three stand out performances for me were:

Nemanja Matic never shirked the challenge in a tough match where space was very limited – he also got forward a lot to try and get the break through nearly scoring with a piledriver.

Willian put in another good shift with his boundless energy and nearly put Ivanovic through with a deft ball. Like the rest of our creative players he found it tough to get through the traffic but he also tracked back and made sure we didn’t get caught on the counter. Not everyone’s cup of tea but I think Willian has taken his game on to a new level this season in attack and defence.

Finally John Terry. He marshalled the defence in his usual tenacious style, but made some great tackles and interceptions when needed. Most of all his calm and experienced head ensured that we didn’t concede late on like me might have done last season so we got at least a point. I was also impressed that he got up the field as an extra midfielder to try and get the break through. Mature and measured performance from our “Captain, Leader, Legend”.
