We take a look at AS Roma ahead of our forthcoming Champions League clash.

The story so far

AS Roma have started their Serie A campaign in inspired form. They’ve only been defeated by Napoli (who flaunt a 100% record in the league this season) and former Italian powerhouse, Inter Milan.

Their defensive prowess has been unequivocally apparent in the league this season. In seven league games, they’ve only conceded five goals, an average of less than one goal conceded per game. By contrast, we’ve conceded eight league goals in eight games.

Nevertheless, their most accomplished centre-half – and a long time Chelsea target – Kostas Manolas is poised to miss the game through injury. They’re also enduring a similar situation to us with regards to absentees through injury which adds an element of intrigue to the game.

From a Champions League perspective, the Italian team are currently situated in second place in Group C having beaten Qarabag and registered a goalless draw against Atletico Madrid.

Best player

According to the statistics-based website Whoscored, former Manchester City striker, Edin Dzeko has been the best player for the Italian giants this season. Despite being 31-years old, and despite having only scored ten goals in all competitions during his first season with Roma, it appears that the Bosnian matures with age like a fine wine.

The Bosnian striker amassed a stunning total of 39 goals in 51 games in all competitions for the Giallorossi last season, and he’s started the new season with the same magnificent excellence that characterised his performances last season. Dzeko has been directly involved in eight goals for Roma this season, scoring seven goals in seven games while also providing one assist for Eusebio Di Francesco’s team.

Considering their defensive solidity and the tactical proficiency that personifies the Italian game, Wednesday night is primed to be an intriguing strategic battle!

Come on Chelsea
