Here’s a statistical preview ahead of our upcoming Champions League game with AS Roma.

Against Qarabag we were unable to run this series as the Blues had never previously faced the Azerbaijani Champions before our 6-0 triumph at Stamford Bridge. Thankfully, there is history between the Blues and AS Roma and we’re poised to delve into past events as we look ahead to Wednesday’s game.

There have been four meetings between us, and AS Roma throughout history, we’ve won two of those four fixtures, drawing one and losing one. Coincidentally, that defeat came in the most recent game between the two teams, back in November 2008.

The first victory was secured in September 1965, a 4-1 triumph in the Fairs Cup which was coupled with a goalless draw away from home in October. Nevertheless, it is exceedingly unlikely that many supporters will remember these games, it is probable that the group stage games of 2008 will evoke an air of familiarity.

Our last triumph against Roma was secured in October 2008 at Stamford Bridge, a 1-0-win courtesy of a second-half John Terry header. However, as previously eluded to, our last meeting wasn’t so positive.

Roma won the return fixture 3-1 at their home ground, as the Blues were reduced to ten men due to Deco’s red card. A consolation goal from John Terry was insufficient to alter our fortunes as goals from Panucci and a brace from Vucinic was enough to seal the three points for the Italian giants.

It looks like we’re primed for another close encounter on Wednesday.
