A historical look at Chelsea’s upcoming Premier League opponents.

This week’s fixture between Chelsea and Huddersfield will denote the first ever Premier League meeting between the two teams. The last time that the Blues played the Terriers in the league was a 3-1 victory for the Premier League champions in Division Two in 1984.

Despite the fact that the Blues have been triumphant in nine of the previous 13 games against Huddersfield, the historical picture is far closer than initially perceived.

There have been 64 meetings between the two teams, with Chelsea rising victorious on 28 occasions, losing 27 games and drawing the remaining nine games.

The last game between the two sides came in the FA Cup in 2008, with the Blues winning 3-1. A Frank Lampard brace and a Salomon Kalou goal was sufficient to secure Chelsea’s place in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup. I wonder if we’ll see a similar scoreline this week.
