Chelsea interested in move for Josha Vagnoman

Chris Bradford discusses Chelsea’s proposed move for Josha Vagnoman.

Chelsea is interested in German under-18 international full-back, Josha Vagnoman, who currently plays for Hamburg, according to the Daily Mirror.

However, they face stiff competition from several sides in both the Premier League and Bundesliga. Newcastle has already had a bid rejected, but Arsenal, Man City, Bayern and Dortmund remain interested. Arsenal, in particular, has a substantial interest in the Hamburg youth prodigy as former Dortmund chief scout, Sven Mislintat, is the new Head of Recruitment at the Emirates.

Vagnoman, born in 2000, is a versatile fullback who can either play in right-back or left-back and has predominately played for Hamburg II (the under-19 side) this season. This season, he featured 17 times, scoring once and assisting four. Hamburg’s under-19 side finished in second of the Regionalliga Nord (the fourth tier of the German football pyramid).

The 17-year-old made his debut for Hamburg’s first team, coming on as a substitute in their 6-0 defeat away to Bayern Munich. He was on the substitutes bench for the 1-1 draw away to Stuttgart and the 2-0 defeat away to Hoffenheim.

Having made three appearances for the German under-17 side, Vagnoman made his under-18 debut in a 2-2 draw against France in March, completing the full 90 minutes in the process.

Vagnoman is only 17 so is definitely one for the future. Should Chelsea try to sign him, he will almost certainly be loaned out. Although not ideal for Hamburg, playing in the Bundesliga II should provide Vagnoman with the experience to continue his development as a full-back.
