Chelsea are locked in negotiations regarding the transfer of Juventus defender, Daniele Rugani.

As per Football Italia, a fee of €50 million will be accepted by the Serie A Champions or will be lowered if performance-related bonuses are included.

This is contrary to the reports from the Metro who revealed that Rugani’s agent claimed that Juventus had no intention of selling the defender.

Should Rugani join Chelsea, it would be a reunion with new Head Coach, Maurizio Sarri. Sarri and the 23-year-old worked together at Empoli. During the 2014/15 season, Rugani featured in all 38 League appearances under Sarri. The Daily Star also reported that Napoli, who was coached by Sarri, were interested in the defender last summer but Juventus refused to sell.

Last season, Rugani was a bit-part player, having only started 22 league appearances and only made two appearances in the Champions League.

Rugani’s contract at Juventus expires in June 2021 and is valued at €22 million by Transfermarkt

Sarri knows Rugani’s traits from their time at Empoli, so surely it is a no-brainer and a perfect fit for ‘Sarriball’?

What message does it convey for current defenders such as Gary Cahill and Kurt Zouma amid Rugani’s arrival? Zouma is linked with a move to Turkish giants Fenerbahce, so another loan looks likely and Cahill, 32, is considering departing Chelsea should the transfer for Rugani be finalised.
