Contrary to earlier reports in which it appeared that Chelsea were leading the race to sign Juventus striker, Gonzalo Higuain; it now appears that Milan have edged ahead of the Stamford Bridge club.

According to Calcio Mercato, Higuain and his agent-brother are set to arrive in Milan this evening (Sunday) and will have a meeting with AC Milan’s technical director, Leonardo.

Leonardo will attempt to convince Higuain on making the rather expensive loan move to the Rossoneri as opposed to joining Chelsea. It will be difficult to convince the Argentine as Higuain will demand almost the same wages that he is earning in Turin (7.5 million per year). It is also acknowledged that Higuain has reservations about the two-year loan deal at the San Siro and would prefer to sign a four-year contract.

Despite the difficulties, Milan are said to be “optimistic” about securing an agreement. A Bonucci-Caldara swap deal has already been agreed in principle, which would see Bonucci return to the Juventus Stadium after one year at Milan. Chelsea were considering making a move for Caldara as it seems their pursuit of fellow Juventus defender, Daniele Rugani ended in defeat.

No doubt there will be twists and turns involving Chelsea, Milan and Higuain until the transfer window closes.
