Back in 2004 and 2005, Chelsea were on the very verge of snapping up one of the best players of his generation in England. I am of course talking about Steven Gerrard, who came perilously close to swapping the red of Liverpool to the blue of Jose Mourinho’s all-conquering Londoners.

The first instance of his switch was blocked when the midfielder – who had reportedly all but agreed a contract – backed out at the last minute as fans protested outside Anfield, while the second proposed switch collapsed after he penned a new contract on Merseyside following the historic Champions League Final win in Istanbul.

Mourinho has always since spoken of his admiration for ‘Stevie G’, who, although he hasn’t picked up the Premier League trophy, has enjoyed a glittering career as the captain of his boyhood club.

Chelsea will always rue the missed opportunity, and perhaps if the move had have gone through Frank Lampard and Gerrard could have formed the terrific midfield partnership they always threatened to be capable of.

The Kop skipper is known for his downbeat personality in interviews, and Darren Farley has captured his persona just perfectly for this Coral ad. It’s a belter…
