Mark Schwarzer 7

The Australian made a couple of good saves and could do nothing about any of Atletico’s goals.

Branislav Ivanovic 7

One of Chelsea’s better performers, Brana was defensively sound all game long.

Gary Cahill 5

Cahill’s club player of the year worthy form left him for the night, making a few mistakes and generally looking shaky otherwise.

John Terry 6

Unlike in the first leg, JT won and lost his share of battles with Diego Costa (although even with his quick recovery, as with a couple of his teammates there is no way he was fully fit himself) and came very close to retaking the lead for the Blues with a header that Thibaut Courtois did excellently to keep out.

Ashley Cole 6

Got caught out for the equaliser in a situation more difficult to defend than it appeared and made way for Jose’s first tactical change early in the second half.

Cesar Azpilicueta 6

Assisted Torres’ opener, but other than that did not offer much in attack from the right of midfield. Settled in easily at left back after the Cole switch.

Ramires 6

Unlike so many matches this season, Ramires was not caught or run out of the game. The Brazilian covered ground well, but at times he and Luiz were up against an extra man in midfield and could not win their battles outright.

David Luiz 6

Some assured bits of play aside, the curly haired one also had one or two lazy missteps, but could have dragged Chelsea back into the match at 2-1 when his flicked header came back off the bar.

Eden Hazard 6

Did not look at all match-fit and while his play still drew double-teams from the Atletico defence, he was unable to force himself into the game as he usually would. Nearly scored in injury time with one good run.

Willian 7 – Man of the Match

Probably Chelsea’s best attacking player on the night, Willian instigated the opener with a tricky bit of play and provided a number of opportunities with three wicked deliveries from set pieces.

Fernando Torres 6

While slightly fortunate with the goal (something all strikers take advantage of) Torres played well without engineering much play for himself, although he received far too little service.

Substitutes:

Samuel Eto’o 6

Another one of the not-quite-fit-but-had-to-play brigade, Eto’o showed echoes of Didier Drogba in the Champions League with a soft concession of a penalty. Shut out excellently by the Atletico defence as Chelsea chased the game.

Demba Ba 6

Won one or two aerial duels, but that’s about all he saw of the ball as Chelsea tried to test the visitors with a more direct threat that, in the end, was easily repelled.

Andre Schurrle 6

Schurrle tried to turn the tide with his added energy on the right flank, but by then the game was up.
