It appears that Antonio has had enough of the board’s policy.

In the early seasons of the Roman era, Chelsea were regarded as a team who were willing to exercise their vast financial resources at any given time to enhance the quality of the squad. However, in recent seasons, there has been a tendency to be far more conservative in the manner that the club spends its money.

Seemingly, the Premier League champions are operating a one in, one out policy with regards to recruitment, that has kept the club’s net expenditure low in recent years. While this mentality has ensured a sense of discipline while spending money, it has also seen the club miss out on numerous transfer targets.

During the summer transfer window – a period where the Blues were expected to invest heavily – Antonio Conte was allegedly keen on the likes of Dani Alves, Danilo, Kyle Walker, Alex Sandro and Fernando Llorente (to name just a few).  None of these players transferred to Chelsea, and our impassioned Italian manager has expressed his discontent at the board’s approach.

The following quotes are from SkyItalia, cited by Metro.

‘I do not aim high with my requests, especially as in my history I’ve rarely been given the players I asked for, I always ended up at clubs who were running an austerity programme.

‘I just try to do my work. If someone arrives, good, if they don’t, then that’s fine too. ‘I have to continue my work, either way.’

The 48-year-old has mentioned on numerous occasions this season that his squad is relatively thin. Accordingly, Chelsea have been linked with several players this window. It will be interesting to see how many of those players are successfully acquired over the duration of the window.
