An interesting transfer rumour has emerged from the Sunday papers.

According to the Sun, Chelsea are prepared to bid for Tottenham Hotspur outcast, Toby Alderweireld.

This indeed is a strange rumour, given Spurs’ reluctance to sell players to Chelsea over the course of recent years.

Nonetheless, Alderweireld is no longer considered as one of Tottenham’s starting centre-backs, and the £45M-rated defender could depart North London in the forthcoming summer transfer window.

It is alleged that the Blues are willing to bid for the experienced Belgian international, who has only made 17 appearances for Spurs this season.

However, given the age of Gary Cahill and David Luiz – both of whom are in their 30’s – it is likely that the club would target a younger player if they’re pursuing defensive recruitment.

At the age of 29, perhaps it’s the wrong time for Chelsea to make a hefty investment in the Belgian defender.
